Direct Setting of Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) Larvae Confirmed with Calcein, a Fluorochrome Dye

چکیده
Ongoing efforts to restore eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) populations in regions of low natural recruitment rely on stocking juveniles (spat shell) rebuild populations. Often, remote setting is used, entailing releasing hatchery-produced larvae into recirculating tanks filled with shells. Other restoration methods that C. virginica directly onto the shell situ, called “direct setting,” have shown promise but were unable definitively prove larval origin without use enclosures. The objective this study was determine if tagging calcein, a fluorochrome dye, could be viable method for confirming studies direct Chesapeake Bay. To do so, conditioned water from adult marked calcein and released by divers three 3.6-m2 research sites constructed bags during July 2019 September recovered after 7 days. Modeling the Dispersal of Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae in Delaware Bay
The interactions of circulation and growth processes in determining the horizontal distribution of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae in the Delaware Bay estuary were investigated with a coupled circulation-individual-based larvae model that used environmental conditions from the spawning seasons (mid-June to mid-September) of 1984, 1985, 1986, 2000, and 2001. Particles, representing...

The relative contributions of the spring-neap tides, river discharge and vertical behavior to the dispersal of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae in Delaware Bay is investigated with a coupled circulation-individual-based larvae model. The coupled model simulates larval growth and behavior along particle trajectories using temperature and salinity conditions obtained from an implemen...
متن کاملGenetic linkage map of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica Gmelin.
Amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs), along with some microsatellite and Type I markers, were used for linkage analysis in Crassostrea virginica Gmelin, the eastern oyster. Seventeen AFLP primer combinations were selected for linkage analysis with two parents and their 81 progeny. The 17 primer combinations produced 396 polymorphic markers, and 282 of them were segregating in the two...
متن کاملIdentification of Eastern Oyster Crassostrea virginica Larvae Using Polarized Light Microscopy in a Mesohaline Region of Chesapeake Bay
Understanding the population dynamics and complete life cycle of bivalves is important for effective management of these commercially and ecologically important organisms. Most of the literature and research on bivalves to date has focused on juvenile and adult bivalves, but much less is known about larvae. The larval stage has been difficult to study due to the lack of a rapid automated approa...
